You can start with a free plan for questions, writing drafts, image generation and coding advice. However, free chat, developer APIs and AI running on your own computer have different limits, costs and data policies. Signing up does not make everything free, and paying does not automatically make it appropriate to submit confidential information.

This article organizes the options by purpose after rechecking official pricing, usage limits and privacy documents on October 9, 2026. We did not benchmark performance on devices or experiment by exhausting free allowances. Where services do not publish a fixed allowance, we have not filled the gap with a number or an “unlimited” claim.

1. Choosing a free AI tool

First decide whether you want to ask questions in an interface, delegate code editing, or integrate AI into your own app. Asking a chatbot to write code differs from letting a development tool edit files and run tests. Checking that a free plan includes the features you need helps avoid surprises after you start.

Choose a starting point for your task

Questions and drafts

Try free chat with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini in a browser. Check image, attachment and search limits separately.

Coding advice and completion

Ask coding questions in chat, or use GitHub Copilot Free or Cursor Hobby. Decide separately whether to allow editing and command execution.

Integration into your own app

Check API free tiers and trial credits. A chat allowance or subscription does not automatically carry over to the API.

Four things to check before trying a tool

  1. Eligibility: Is there a free plan, and does it include the features and models you need? Check regional availability, age requirements and individual versus organizational terms.
  2. Limits: Look beyond message counts. Check which allowances cover images, attachments, tokens and agent work.
  3. Costs: Distinguish a time-limited trial from an ongoing free tier. Check payment details, additional usage and API billing conditions.
  4. Input data: Read the training, retention and external integration terms. Start with public material or fictional examples; do not paste someone else’s personal information or secrets as test data.

For example, you can try summarizing a public event announcement in free chat. Uploading many internal files, however, requires permission to send them and suitable contractual terms, as well as sufficient capacity. Being able to process information for free does not prove that you are allowed to send it.

2. Free ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini plans

The following compares entry points and restrictions on free plans. It is not a performance ranking based on identical tasks and conditions. Writing and coding responses can be wrong, so check important conclusions against sources or execution results.

ServiceWhat you can start with for freeLimits to check
ChatGPTText conversations, search, image generation and file analysisOrdinary text and features such as attachments, images and voice have separate allowances
ClaudeConversations, web search, file creation and coding adviceThe free session allowance resets every five hours / availability varies with demand and other factors
GeminiConversations with an automatically selected model (mostly Flash-Lite), image generation and moreConsumption varies by feature and reasoning effort / check usage information and reset notifications

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

The official pricing page describes ordinary text chat on the free plan as unlimited, subject to safeguards against abuse. Image generation, uploads, voice and other features are also available, but have separate limits. Receiving a text reply does not show that you still have image-generation allowance.

On the review date, the pricing page listed GPT-6 Luna for the free plan. The Free Tier FAQ still named GPT-5.6 Luna, so the official pages differed. Refer to the pricing page for model listings and check your own interface for actual availability. Some models, including GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, are not included in the free plan.

Sources: Official ChatGPT pricing, Free Tier FAQ.

Claude (Anthropic)

The free plan lists the Sonnet and Haiku families and supports web search and advice on writing and code. The Opus and Fable families and Claude Code have separate access conditions. The free session allowance resets every five hours, and the number of messages you can send varies with demand. Other limits may also apply; there is no guaranteed fixed number of uses per day.

Combining your goal, the relevant text and the desired output can reduce back-and-forth compared with repeatedly resending long passages. We have not measured a guaranteed reduction in usage. Models, conversation length and features also affect consumption.

Sources: Claude pricing, Getting started with Claude. For differences between the families, see our Claude model comparison.

Gemini (Google)

According to Google’s official help, since October 9, 2026 users without an AI subscription can no longer choose a model themselves; only “Auto” is available. Most prompts are answered by Flash-Lite, and prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro. With automatic selection turned off, every response uses Flash-Lite. The plans page also lists the free plan as “Access to 3.5 Flash-Lite”. However, when checked on October 12, 2026, the table in the usage limits and features help article still showed Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro all as available without a plan, so the official pages disagree. Image generation and other features are also available, but features and limits can change. Raising the effort level (low, medium or high), generating images or using Deep Research may consume allowance differently from a short, ordinary question.

On the web, check your allowance under “Usage Limits” in settings. Use the approaching-limit notifications and the reset time shown after reaching a limit. Multipliers advertised for paid plans cannot be converted into a fixed number of free questions.

Considering other services

DeepSeek and other services are possible alternatives, but this comparison does not guarantee a fixed free allowance or “effectively unlimited” use. DeepSeek’s official website provides separate chat and API entry points, and its terms allow service or feature changes and suspension. Do not infer consumer chat allowances from API prices or model announcements.

Sources: DeepSeek official website, Terms of Use. Before adding another service, consider whether it addresses a problem with your current tool and is worth the effort of transferring your work.

3. AI image generation

If you want to try generating a few images, the free ChatGPT and Gemini allowances are starting points. Both have image limits; neither means unlimited free retries. Check commercial-use rules and restrictions involving people or brands separately from pricing.

MethodCosts and allowanceWhat to check first
ChatGPT image generationLimited allowance on the free planImage-limit notifications / whether the editing you need is included
Gemini image generationEligible features on the free planAvailable Nano Banana family features / regional and account conditions
Running Stable Diffusion or similar models locallyDepends on the model license and computer costsCommercial terms for each model / memory requirements / rights for additional models

It is inaccurate to describe all Stable Diffusion models as “completely free with unrestricted commercial use.” Stability AI’s Community License has conditions covering eligible models and users. Check the distribution page for derivative models and models under different licenses. Source: Stability AI licensing.

Example prompts for trying a free allowance

Instead of simply asking for “a picture of a cat,” specify the purpose, composition and exclusions: “A cat by a window, watercolor style, landscape orientation. No text or logos.” For revisions, narrow the change: “Change only the background to nighttime; keep the cat in the same position.” These examples clarify instructions; they do not guarantee success rates or a particular number of generations.

The sources are the ChatGPT and Gemini feature tables linked in Section 2. To compare generated images, use the same prompt and record text errors, adherence to the requested composition and the effort needed for revisions.

4. Free coding assistance

Asking coding questions in free chat does not mean you can run Claude Code for free. Claude’s free plan does not include Claude Code. Access requires suitable conditions for your environment and authentication method, such as an eligible paid subscription or Console API usage. Any small API trial credit should be distinguished from an ongoing free plan.

“Explain this code” versus “Edit these files”

Advice in chat

Ask for explanations of code or errors. Review suggestions before applying them yourself. Do not paste logs or configuration files containing secrets.

Work in an editor or agent

These tools can complete code, edit files and execute commands. Check the target folder, permissions, external data transfers and usage allowance first.

ToolFree accessHow to read the limits
GitHub Copilot FreeCode completion and selected chat and agent features2,000 completions per month / AI features use credits / do not equate this with a fixed “50 chats per month”
Cursor HobbyLimited Agent, Chat and Tab completion allowanceThe official help reviewed gives no uniform fixed count / do not rely on older figures of 2,000 completions and 50 requests
CodexLimited access is also available with ChatGPT FreeCheck eligible models, environments, features and your remaining allowance / API-key use is billed through the API
Claude free chatAsk for code explanations, advice and reviewsNot a free Claude Code subscription / subject to chat limits

Sources: GitHub Copilot plans, Cursor free plan, Codex pricing and limits, Claude Code access requirements.

On the review date, the Codex pricing page described Free access as GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, with a gradual rollout. This does not guarantee free access to the same CLI, Cloud and other environments as Plus. Check the eligible plan for the environment you want to use.

If you only want an investigation

State the goal explicitly: “Explain possible causes and how to check them, without making changes.” However, a written prohibition alone does not technically prevent file writes or command execution. Check the tool’s permission settings and working directory. This issue is not resolved by choosing a free or paid plan.

Review generated code in small batches using diffs, tests and the actual interface. An error disappearing does not establish security or correct behavior. For development-tool settings, see Codex secret files and permissions.

5. Local AI: cost, performance and confidentiality

Ollama and LM Studio are options for running downloaded models on your own computer. Local inference does not consume a cloud service’s message allowance, but electricity, hardware, storage, processing time and model licensing conditions still matter. It does not mean zero cost or no performance constraints.

Check these separately before running AI locally

Runtime tool

Ollama offers CLI and API integration; LM Studio provides a graphical interface for working with models. Installing a tool alone does not make a model available.

Model and computer

Memory requirements depend on model size, quantization and conversation length. Start with a small model and check actual speed and quality.

Communication and storage

Check whether you are using a local or cloud model. Examine search, external APIs, plugins, logs and backups separately.

Ollama and LM Studio

Ollama supports local models through its CLI and API. However, Ollama also offers cloud models and web search. Using the same app does not mean every operation stays on your computer. Its official FAQ distinguishes local execution from cloud use and explains how to disable cloud features.

LM Studio’s documentation says chat with downloaded models, document processing and the local server can work offline. Model discovery, downloads, runtime downloads and update checks, however, require connectivity. Being able to perform local inference differs from an app never communicating externally.

Sources: Ollama FAQ, LM Studio offline operation. We have not changed settings or installed models for this article.

How to determine hardware requirements

What to checkHow to assess it
Supported OS and CPUCheck the tool’s requirements first / LM Studio for Windows x64 requires AVX2 support
RAM and VRAMLM Studio recommends at least 16 GB RAM / its Windows GPU recommendation is at least 4 GB dedicated VRAM / this does not guarantee support for every model
Model sizeParameter count and quantization affect size even within one family / allow memory for execution as well as the model file
Conversation and document lengthLong contexts and concurrent requests consume additional memory / test the length of your intended tasks
StorageAdd up the model, runtime and supporting files / reserve more space if keeping multiple models

Figures such as 16 GB RAM or 8 GB VRAM alone do not establish that a 70B model will run comfortably. Requirements depend on model size, whether it loads into RAM or VRAM, quantization and context length. Sources: LM Studio system requirements, and the Ollama FAQ sections on memory and concurrency.

Before handling confidential information

Even with a local model, a configuration that sends input to external search, cloud APIs or connected apps involves processing outside your device. Check conversation logs, working files, device sharing and backups too. Local execution can reduce data transfers, but does not provide an unconditional security guarantee.

For business data, first check whether your organization permits that use. If the approved configuration is unclear, consider working with public material or anonymized examples instead of submitting the information first.

6. Free API tiers and trial credits

An API lets your own app or script call a model. A free chat account or paid chat subscription does not automatically provide free API access. Distinguish free tiers, trial credits with a balance or time limit, and usage-based billing.

Provider or methodWhat “free” meansWhere to check
Gemini APIFree tiers for eligible models / not every model or feature is includedThe official pricing page’s Free Tier column and your actual AI Studio limits
GroqFree-plan allowances / limits vary by model and organizationYour organization’s Limits page / check both requests and tokens
OpenAI APIAssume paid use unless your account shows otherwise / free credits are not guaranteed for every new accountAPI balance, grants, expiry and billing settings
Claude APIOfficial API pricing documentation describes a small trial credit for new usersActual grant, expiry and balance in Console / distinct from an ongoing free tier
Local model APIInference on your own computer is separate from cloud API chargesInference destination, model license, hardware and electricity costs

Why “requests per day” is not enough

Gemini API limits include requests per minute, tokens per minute and requests per day. Reaching any applicable limit can cause an error, and limits vary by model and usage tier. There is no uniform “1,500 free requests per day” allowance. Check your actual limits in AI Studio.

Source: Gemini API rate limits. Start with a small task using public data and design retries so that they cannot grow without bounds. Before enabling billing, check the chargeable models and features and the conditions for additional purchases.

Protect confidential data even with a free API

Google’s pricing and terms explain that input and output from unpaid services may be used to improve products. Data treatment varies with location and billing status, so read the applicable terms as well as the pricing table. For example, Paid Services data-use terms also apply to free-tier use in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. AI Studio is also treated as a Paid Service in circumstances such as when the account has access to a project with active Cloud Billing. Google instructs users not to submit confidential, sensitive or personal information to unpaid services. Source: Gemini API Additional Terms of Service.

7. Deciding whether to pay

If the free allowance covers your tasks and you can comfortably check the output, you can keep using it. Compare paid plans if limits frequently make you wait, required models or features are excluded, or you need organizational controls and contractual terms. Consider individual subscriptions and organizational contracts separately.

What to do when you reach a free limit

Choose based on the feature you need and how long you can wait

Need the same feature → wait for the reset

Check the limit notification and reset time. Ordinary chat may remain available even when image generation or file analysis has reached a separate limit.

Another provider is suitable → transfer the task

For example, move from ChatGPT to Claude. Check that the destination’s free allowance supports the task. This does not restore your allowance with the original service.

Frequently run out → compare paid plans

Compare the required models, features, allowances and prices. Paid plans also have limits; subscribing does not guarantee uninterrupted work.

Combining services does not guarantee free use all day. These options concern ordinary use of different providers. We do not recommend creating additional accounts with the same service to bypass limits. For the distinction between holding accounts and how they are used, see multiple-account rules for both providers.

Provide a short summary of the task’s purpose, decisions and next steps. Do not assume chat history or attachments transfer automatically between providers. Before resending personal or confidential information, check your authority to send it, its destination and the data terms.

Compare subscription prices and additional costs

OptionOfficial price or conditions on the review dateBefore paying
ChatGPT Plus$20 per monthRequired Chat and Codex features and allowance / additional credits are separate
Claude Pro$20 billed monthly / $200 billed annually, shown officially as $17 per monthAnnual billing is paid upfront / Claude Code and chat share allowance
Cursor Pro$20 per monthTab completion versus Agent usage / additional usage and model conditions
GitHub Copilot Pro$10 per monthGitHub’s development Copilot / distinct from Microsoft’s general-purpose Copilot
Google AI paid plansCheck region, plan and billing periodGemini app allowance and storage / the API is a separate arrangement

US dollar prices do not state your final bill in local currency. Check taxes, currency, purchase channel and promotions at checkout. Claude’s monthly equivalent for annual billing is not a contract where you pay only $17 each month.

Paying alone does not stop training use

Check costs and data protection separately

Individual chat plans

Do not judge by free versus paid alone. Check training settings and exceptions for individual ChatGPT and Claude subscriptions.

Organizational plans and APIs

Data treatment varies by contract. Exclusion from training does not itself guarantee every aspect of retention, monitoring, integrations or permission to submit data.

Local execution

Check whether processing stays entirely on your device. Examine cloud models, search, integrations and logs separately.

OpenAI explains when eligible content from individual ChatGPT and Codex use may improve models and how settings control this. It says Business, Enterprise, Edu and API data are not used for training by default, although cases such as opting into sharing differ. Submitting feedback also has exceptions.

Anthropic likewise treats Free, Pro and Max, including Claude Code used with those accounts, as consumer products, and explains model-improvement consent and privacy settings. “Paid means no training” does not hold for either provider’s individual plans. Settings that stop training use do not guarantee the elimination of all retention or safety checks.

FAQ

Q. Can I start using AI without paying?

You can start with free chat from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Usage and feature limits apply. Local AI does not use cloud request allowances, but hardware, electricity, storage and model licensing conditions still matter. Distinguish a free trial from an ongoing free plan.

Q. Does free Claude include Claude Code?

You can ask coding questions in Claude’s free chat, but the free plan does not include Claude Code. Check conditions such as an eligible paid subscription or Console API usage. Codex offers limited Free access; the two products have different free-access conditions.

Q. Is it safe to enter personal information into free AI?

Free versus paid is not enough to decide. Check your authority to submit data, contractual terms and settings, training use, retention and connected services. Paid individual plans and local AI are not unconditionally safe either. See costs versus data protection.

Q. Which free AI tool is best?

Choose based on the features you need and the actual free allowance. Try tasks such as summarizing the same public document and compare accuracy, revision effort and limit notifications. This article is not a performance ranking based on common test conditions.

Q. What should I do when I reach an AI usage limit?

You can wait for the allowance to reset, continue with another provider or consider a paid plan. The alternative also has limits; free use all day is not guaranteed. Distinguish this from bypassing limits through multiple accounts with the same service. See options when reaching a limit.

Q. Can programming beginners use these tools?

Start by asking chat to explain an error or a short piece of code. Do not paste logs containing secrets, and review suggestions before applying them. If you delegate file editing or command execution, check permissions and the working directory as well as usage limits.

Q. Where should I check if this information becomes outdated?

Consult the official pricing and help links in this article and your account’s usage information. A search AI’s answer alone does not verify a specification. Model names, fixed allowances and trial conditions can change, so compare the same plan and feature in the pricing table.

Start with a small task using public material. Check whether the free allowance covers the features you need. If it does not, distinguish whether the obstacle is usage volume, missing features, contractual terms or data protection.
