If ChatGPT shows a Japanese notice meaning "This operation could not be completed. Please try again" when you try to download a ZIP or PDF, first check whether the generated file still exists and whether a fresh link lets you receive it. The wording alone does not establish file corruption, an exceeded size limit, or loss of the entire conversation. Check the report that creation finished separately from whether you can open the file on your device.
Observed Japanese notice:
この操作を完了できませんでした。もう一度お試しください
Translation: This operation could not be completed. Please try again.
The exact equivalent notice in the English interface has not been established.
Created and received are separate checks
Creation
Does the file exist? Are its displayed name and size correct?
Delivery
Can you save it from the link to your device? This step can fail.
Content check
Does the ZIP open? Does it contain the required files and information?

What the notice establishes and possible causes
The notice above is a general statement that an operation did not complete. If it appeared immediately after clicking a download link, that helps locate the issue at the download stage. Without an HTTP code or specific reason on screen, however, it does not identify which underlying operation failed.
OpenAI's official error troubleshooting guide covers "Download failed" and "File Not Found" when opening links to generated files. It recommends checking whether the file was generated recently, is below 512MB, and whether network conditions such as a VPN or proxy are involved. We have not established that the Japanese notice in this case belongs to the same internal category as those English errors. Use the guide as troubleshooting advice without inventing a code that was not displayed.
Generated-link expiry and file state
The official guide explains that generated files expire quickly. Check whether the existing file remains available and request a fresh link.
Connection, interface, or service issues
Creation may succeed while reception fails. Record the time, device, and results in another approved environment.
Try a fresh link before assuming expiry
The official guide says generated files expire quickly, but that page does not give an exact lifetime shared by all generated files. If a download fails immediately after generation, do not attribute it solely to expiry. Even if reissuing a link helps, that alone does not prove that expiry was the root cause.
A visible link label and an available download target are also different things. A conversation saying "I created it" does not mean you have received the file. Ask the original chat to check the actual output file and, if it can be reused, provide a fresh download link.
Check whether the published size condition explains the failure
The official download troubleshooting guide recommends a file below 512MB. If the displayed size of about 12MB matches the actual file, it does not reach that limit. However, being below 512MB does not guarantee a successful download. Exceeding the published limit is different from a size-dependent delivery problem. In this case, the user's subsequent report that splitting the output worked increases the possibility that file size or the amount transferred at once was involved. We have no evidence attributing the failure solely to the number of files or to Japanese filenames.
Ask the file-generating assistant to check the actual file's byte size to clarify a displayed size. The number of files inside a ZIP, their uncompressed size, and the ZIP's own size are separate values. Do not confuse the extracted size with the size of the ZIP being downloaded.
Check and reissue the file in the original chat
Keep the original conversation and copy any visible handoff text or important decisions first. A failed download alone does not call for deleting the chat or changing billing or security settings. The following sequence is this guide's recommendation based on official troubleshooting advice.
Check the original file → fresh link → download and compare
- Existence: check the existing ZIP's name, actual size, and availability.
- Integrity: check whether it opens and its contents can be listed.
- Delivery: provide a fresh download link for that file.
- Acceptance: save it locally and check that the required contents are present.
A prompt you can send directly
A Japanese notice meaning "This operation could not be completed" appeared when I tried to download the ZIP.
First check whether the existing ZIP actually exists and remains available.
Show its filename, actual size, file inventory, and ZIP integrity test results, then provide a fresh download link for that file.
If the file is missing, first explain what remains and what cannot be recreated.
Do not describe information you have not obtained as restored or verified.
The aim is to obtain the result of inspecting the actual file in an environment with file-access tools, not merely another written reply. If the assistant lacks access or tools, ask it to state that limitation. A claim of "I checked" alone does not establish successful local download or complete contents.
Consider recreating the file only if the existing one is unavailable
If the original file or source material remains, recreation from the same inputs may be possible. However, not all previously used data or detailed decisions may still be accessible. Before recreation, check what material is available, what cannot be reproduced, and how the output will differ from the earlier version.
When recreating a ZIP, asking for a separate version makes the distinction clearer than silently replacing the earlier file. Ask whether it is "the same artifact as before" or "a version recreated from the remaining information." If information is missing, supply the necessary material from the conversation or your own saved records.
Alternatives when delivery keeps failing
If a fresh link still fails, it is worth trying to distribute the same artifact across several smaller ZIPs. The user in this case reported a successful download after splitting. For example, separate "handoff notes and specifications," "source files," and "test results." No universal size threshold guaranteeing success has been established, so use files smaller than the current output and check that each can actually be downloaded.
After a successful split, check for missing files
Create a mapping of each ZIP's name, size, and file inventory. Download and open every part, then compare with the original inventory. Distribute files from the same version rather than recreating the source during splitting.
Providing the most important handoff notes in the chat as well as delivering artifacts as files gives you two routes and lets you explain the next work without relying solely on the ZIP. However, pasting all lengthy source code into messages is prone to omissions and formatting problems and is not necessarily a substitute for a complete archive. Record filenames and versions, and request a mapping if several ZIPs are used.
Chat downloads, Library, and data exports
ChatGPT offers several routes for receiving files. Even if both use the ZIP extension, a generated artifact and an account data export are different features. Do not apply one route's expiry or retention conditions to another.
A ZIP generated in a chat
An artifact requested from the AI. Check the link, file existence, and contents. A fixed lifetime shared by all generated files has not been established.
Files saved in Library
If the saved file is available, selecting and downloading it provides another route.
Account data export
An export of included chat history and account information. The download link received expires after 24 hours.
Check Library if the file was saved there
OpenAI's Library guide explains how to search saved files in Library on the web, select them, and choose Download. Use the filename and the distinction between created and uploaded files to locate the version you need.
We have not confirmed that the ZIP in this case was actually saved in Library. If it is not found there, do not conclude that all information was lost; check the source conversation and retention conditions. The official retention policy explains that files not saved in Library can expire separately from the conversation's retention settings.
Even if you find a file in Library, its displayed name alone does not establish that it is the same version. Compare its creation time, size, and file inventory. Different outcomes between a generated link and a Library download provide concrete diagnostic information to report to support.
Do not apply an export link's 24-hour expiry to generated ZIPs
The official data export instructions state that a link received by email or SMS expires after 24 hours and that preparing the export can take up to 7 days. These instructions concern an export requested through Settings or the Privacy Portal.
There is no basis for applying that 24-hour period directly to a file requested in a chat with "create a handoff ZIP." An account export also does not guarantee restoration of every artifact created by the AI. Inspect the downloaded contents to see whether the conversations and files you need are included. Changes to settings and requests for exports must follow the owner's decision and permission.
Protecting information in a handoff ZIP
When a conversation reaches its length limit and you move to a new chat, providing handoff notes and a ZIP helps make the required information explicit. However, asking to "put all information in a ZIP" is different from confirming that all information is actually included. Specify which files and portions of the conversation are currently accessible, and request an inventory that lets you check for omissions.
Decide what must transfer first
Work context
Goals, decisions, prohibitions, rejected ideas, remaining tasks, and unverified items.
Actual artifacts
Specifications, source, data, test results, file inventory, and version mapping.
Check archive integrity and information completeness separately
A ZIP integrity test checks matters such as whether the archive can be read. It does not prove that the latest specifications, previously rejected ideas, and unverified conditions are all present. Even an archive containing 138 files could omit a necessary 139th file. The count is useful for acceptance checks, but is not completeness itself.
After downloading, inspect the inventory first and compare the names and versions of important documents and source files. Ask the new chat not only to read the ZIP, but also to report conflicts with the handoff notes and files it cannot read. Keep the original conversation and your own saved records until the destination chat has checked the contents.
Check the attached ZIP's file inventory and report anything you could not read.
Compare it with the handoff notes and organize the goals, decisions, prohibitions, completed work, remaining tasks, and unverified items.
State gaps or contradictions explicitly rather than filling them with guesses.
Check separately that the archive opens and that all required information is present.
Receiving a file does not mean every part was read
When a ZIP contains many files, consider the possibility that the new chat may overlook important documents. Specify a reading order, such as handoff notes, latest specifications, files relevant to unfinished work, and test results, to make coverage easier to track. Ask it to list files read and areas not yet reviewed.
For ZIPs containing programs or scripts, distinguish listing the contents from executing them too. Do not run everything merely because you received it; establish the target and permissions for any verification requiring execution. The purpose here is transferring information. Republishing confidential information at a public link is not a standard troubleshooting step for a download failure.
Diagnosing repeated failures on mobile and PC
If a fresh link fails too, record the file-side and receiving-side conditions separately. One comparison is whether the same file can be downloaded using the same account on another approved device or browser. If changing devices also changes the account you are logged into, the comparison is not controlled.
The file is present at the destination: the download may already have completed. Do not judge success or failure from the notice alone; check the saved size and whether the file opens.
Only a fresh link works: the link or its delivery state may be involved. Also compare whether the old and new links refer to the same contents.
Only another device works: browser, app, connection, and save-location conditions are possibilities. A device difference does not rule out every account-level or service-side issue.
Only this file fails across several environments: recheck its state and delivery route. Compare whether another small generated file can be downloaded only when that comparison is needed.
OpenAI Status lets you check the relevant features and the time of the failure. Read file- or generation-related details as well as general ChatGPT incidents. No listed incident does not prove the absence of an individual problem.
General official troubleshooting includes possible steps involving VPNs, proxies, extensions, and reloading. However, do not disable protective settings without authorization on a confidential device or organizational environment. First compare approved environments, and seek the administrator's or owner's decision if changes are necessary. Reinstalling the app, deleting conversations, or changing plans should not be the first step.
For support, collect the full error text, date and time with time zone, file generation time, displayed and verified actual sizes, device and app version, and the result of refreshing the link. Add network codes or request IDs only if obtained. The official support instructions explain how to record diagnostic information and avoid including confidential information. You do not need to publicly post raw conversations or credentials.
An answer stopping partway through is different from a download failure. See handling Message delivery timed out and Too many requests for distinctions between delivery timeouts, request restrictions, and usage allowances.
What we confirmed in this case
On October 13, 2026, AI Arte received a user's screenshot of an error while attempting to download a handoff ZIP. It showed the Japanese notice above and the generating assistant's description of about 12MB, 138 files, and a passed ZIP integrity check. Private project information included in the filename is not published.
Confirmed
The full notice; the user's explanation that it appeared after a download attempt; the size, count, and claimed verification shown on the card; and the subsequent user report of a successful download after splitting.
Not confirmed
The actual ZIP's existence, size, and contents; link expiry; HTTP code; the generating assistant's performed checks; and root cause.
We did not obtain the actual ZIP or independently rerun its integrity test in this investigation. Seeing the words "integrity verified" is not treated as a test passed by this article's investigators. If about 12MB is the actual size, it fits the published 512MB condition, but that alone does not rule out a size-dependent issue.
Follow-up: successful download after splitting
On the same day, the user reported that splitting worked. This is an observation that splitting was an effective workaround for receiving the files in this case. We did not obtain the original and split files, part sizes, or network records, so AI Arte has not reproduced the result under identical conditions. Splitting also creates new output files or links, so success alone does not establish size as the only cause.
Other users have also reported success with splitting
The older Reddit user thread "File is too large" includes a report of previously successful 30–50MB downloads beginning to fail, and replies describing successful downloads after dividing the output into several ZIPs. Another user reported failures above roughly 1MB. However, other users said splitting did not help.
These are users' experiences at the time, not specifications applying to every account today. Their error wording also differs from this case. We do not conclude that the current official limit is 1MB or that the same bug caused this user's failure.
A download failure alone also does not establish that all conversation information or the original artifacts were lost. The official retention policy distinguishes ordinary conversations, files saved in Library, and temporary files. First check what remains, then distinguish what can be retrieved, reissued, or recreated.
Summary: check the fresh link and file contents
When a download fails, keep the original conversation, check whether the existing file exists, and request a fresh link. If the same version is saved in Library, downloading from there is another option. If it remains unavailable, distributing the same version across smaller ZIPs is another possibility. The user in this case succeeded after splitting, but neither the notice nor that success identifies the root cause by itself.
For a handoff, check separately whether you can receive the file, open the ZIP, and find all required information. If the original conversation no longer accepts messages or answer delivery stops, also consult the ChatGPT delivery-timeout and request-restriction checklist for initial steps.
Frequently asked questions
Can a file of about 12MB exceed the size limit?
If the display matches the actual ZIP size, it meets the below-512MB condition in the official download troubleshooting guide. However, a size-dependent issue cannot be ruled out even within that published condition. The user in this case succeeded after splitting. We have not established a size below which success is guaranteed.
Do generated ZIPs disappear after 24 hours?
We found no basis for applying that expiry to every generated ZIP. The 24-hour period is the official expiry of an account data export's download link. Distinguish that feature from artifacts created in a chat.
Does passing a ZIP test mean all information is included?
No. Archive readability and the presence of all necessary information are separate checks. Compare specifications, decisions, source files, and unfinished items using the handoff notes and file inventory.
Is everything lost if the link cannot be refreshed?
That notice alone does not establish loss. Check what remains in the original conversation, Library, and working environment. Even if the original file is gone, recreation from source material may be possible, but complete restoration of identical contents is not guaranteed.
